BMW Sets Stakes in Lightweight Material Production

Sometimes a light alteration can make a heavy difference. Such is the case with the use of vehicle materials. The average consumer may not consider exactly how weight plays in to a model's performance but our favorite automaker is working hard to produce new BMW variants that are faster and more fuel-efficient. What is their secret weapon? Lightweight carbon fibers.

BMW is not the first to add carbon fibers into the material mix. Other automakers are equally interested in the substance's ability to perform well and lesson vehicle load. But to ensure it stays ahead of the weight game, BMW has secured a 15.16-percent stake in SGL Carbon SE. As one of the biggest fish in the pool, SGL is a key piece for the automaker to fit into its carbon fiber puzzle. Already, the two companies have taken on a joint venture in the form of a top-of-the-line manufacturing plant that will produce the coveted material.

While the partnership with SGL produces a bounty of benefits for BMW, it also serves as an example for other automakers. In order for the cost of carbon fiber production to go down, others must follow in the pioneering company's footsteps. Friedrich Eichiner, member of the Board of Management, adds, "Lightweight construction will play an increasingly important role in the automobile industry in the future."1
